Roald Dahl,
Great children's author | Roald Dahl seems to live in his own little world where anything is possible. Considered one the best children's authors of all time, Dahl writes fantastic books of places where everyone is just a little bit magical. His books are usually about the trials of children - but here, the bad is always punished, while the good and patient are rewarded. Many of his titles, such as Matilda, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (the movie is called Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory), and James and the Giant Peach, have become wildly successful movies. Not a kid? Read them anyway! If you're having a rough day, or just need a little smile, these stories can always make you feel a little bit better. They show you that it could be worse, and there's always a light at the end of the tunnel.

Writing Down the Bones | Natalie Goldberg There are a lot of "how to" books on the market, and a lot of them are for beginning writers. Writing Down the Bones by Natalie Goldberg is a great guide to writing of any kind. She relates stories of her own experiences with getting work done and teaching her writing workshops, and in the process, she weaves a larger, more universal story about the act of writing in itself. Goldberg is intimate and relational with her readers, giving them laughs and heart tugs along with the excellent advice. Keep a notebook handy as you read-you will need it to try out all her creative ideas!

Ice Bound Dr. Jerri Nielsen "That doctor who had cancer at the South Pole" has produced her story behind the story. And it's not about life at the South Pole, family 10,000 miles away when you need them, historic rescue efforts, or a personal journey of discovery and growth, it is about all of the above and more. "Why go there anyway?" The BIG question we all itch to ask is answered to everyone's satisfaction. Mountain climbers reply "Because it's there", and we still don't know what makes them go. Dr. Neilsen at first wanted her privacy protected, but readers will be glad she overcame her reluctance to produce a captivating and informative report. You'll be cold, lonely, scared, fascinated, abandoned, heartwarmed, and glad you read about it. But you still probably won't want to visit. |

The Wizard of Oz Pop-Up Book story by Frank L. Baum illustrated by Robert Sabuda Wizard of Oz fans! Robert Sabuda has done The Wonderful Wizard of Oz as a pop-up book. Sabuda's talent for intricate, amazing pop-ups is displayed at its best in this book. Along with the detailed art work is a shortened version of Frank Baum's original story. Sabuda was doing pop-ups as a child, but gave up on doing Oz because he couldn't make the tornado twist. He somehow solved that problem, as the first page opens with a tornado twisting its way through Dorothy's farm. From this to the glories of the Emerald City to the Wizard lifting off in a hot air balloon, every page is a delight. |

The Giver | Lois Lowry This Newbery Award winning novel is a thought provoking read. Although recommended for Young Adults, this book is deep enough for adults as well. It is the story of a world of "sameness" and structure, where careers and spouses are assigned. Everything is carefully controlled for the security of the community. Most of all, it is the story of Jonas, a 12 year old boy eagerly awaiting his Assignment. To his amazement, he is chosen for the role of "Giver", the respected person in the community. As he trains for this prestigious position, he is shocked and distressed by the truths he discovers.

Ethan Frome | Edith Wharton Do you ever feel as if life itself is against you? What if that was really true? Ethan Frome is a poor farmer is the desolate village of Starkfield, where they say "The smart ones get away." Ethan wants to, but is instead trapped in a nightmare of a life. His wife, Zeena, is horrible, mean, and just short of abusive. The girl he is really in love with lives in his house and takes care of his hypochondriac wife. His life is the picture of misery, darkness, and suffering. How can he get out? More importantly - if he could leave, would he just abandon his wife like that? Wharton draws for us the picture of a world where life is a short step from death, a picture of a man who is even closer to dead than alive. She shows us cutting glimpse into a life in a cold, bland place they call Starkfield.

The Rose that Grew from Concrete | Tupak Shakur In his music, Tupak Shakur was larger than life, wild, angry, and so much more. He flew to the top of his industry with his style. He wowed people from the beginning. I found the secret to his excellence in his book, The Rose that Grew from Concrete. It is a volume of poems he wrote about his relationships with people, himself and the world. He was a deep man who knew how to love and hate and endure pain, and all of this is reflected in his writing. It is one of my favorite collections of contemporary poetry because he threw all tradition to the side and wrote his heart into a book. I recommend anyone looking for passion to read his words and learn a little more about life from the man who knew.

What's Cheap & Free in Michigan William Bailey With the summer travel season starting soon, this book by Glovebox Guidebooks of America would be a handy addition for triptakers who want inexpensive(cheap) destinations. It covers 79 counties in Michigan. For instance, in Jackson County it lists the Cascades, the Ella Sharp Museum, the Lee Conklin Antique Organ Museum in Hanover plus 3 others "cheap" places to visit. The book gives a little background info, travel directions and other particulars such as hours and any admission charges. This is a really fun book for travelers. |

Dale Earnhardt Several Titles Big. Big in life, big in death, big on the track, and big in the hearts of his fans. And now big on the bookshelves. If you are interested in Dale Earnhardt, all the books about his career are good books. Some people dominate and he was one of them. So the authors and photographers don't have to do anything except get out of the way and let this legend's story tell itself. About all you have to decide is whether you want a hardcover that will last longer or a paperback you can throw away later. Some of the books have more pictures than others. And a couple cover the Daytona accident in greater detail and skim over his career achievements. Just take a minute and look through them. You'll know which one you want. |
